Christmas Yard Cards Are Back
The Christmas Yard Cards are back, again! The City of Zeeland hosted Christmas Yard Card workshops throughout the end of October to give City residents the chance to join in this age-old tradition. Yard Cards will be displayed throughout Zeeland from November 26 through the end of December.
The Christmas Yard Cards made their way to Zeeland in the 1960’s when a local resident came upon an outdoor Christmas Card while driving through Minnesota. She then brought the idea to Zeeland where it really took off. The Yard cards went through ups and downs and really took off again in the mid-eighties, and Zeeland was name Christmas Card City USA.
A number of people still pull out their Christmas Yard Card but it has always been an idea to bring back the workshops to help people create their own card. The Yard Card Workshops were held in the basement of the Howard Miller Library where City Residents could purchase a kit which included everything needed to complete their own card. Workshop attendees are encouraged to display their card on Monday, November 26 before the start of the Magical Christmas Parade. 35 new cards were created during these workshops and the City is encouraging others that have a card tucked in the back of the garage to bring it out for all to enjoy.
The Yard Card Workshops were made possible by the help from Zeeland Lumber and Supply as well as Zeeland Ace Hardware.
