In 2017, with the completion of the Woonerf project, the City of Zeeland introduced a seasonal synthetic skating rink to make winters even more wonderful! The rink is located at the Elm Street Park; the corner of Elm and Cherry Streets. This year, to complement the skating rink and provide the public better access to skating as a winter activity, the City is launching an ice skate rental program. Skate rental is available at the Howard Miller Library, 14 S. Church Street.

This program is free and available to anyone with a Howard Miller Library Card or a library card, in good standing, from any library within the Lakeland Library Cooperative. All adult skaters must complete a waiver of liability from themselves and for their minor children.

The City of Zeeland is excited to offer this program to the community! With the help of the Howard Miller Library and the greater reach they have through their affiliation with the Lakeland Library Cooperative (which recognizes and honors cardholders from all affiliated libraries) we are able to make the program available to a far greater audience!

The City of Zeeland’s skating rink is available now through the end of winter. Mayor Klynstra proudly clears snow from the rink on a regular basis – but there is also a shovel on site, and skaters are encouraged to clear the rink for themselves, before use. Experienced skaters will notice that the synthetic rink skates differently than traditional ice. Though, unlike a traditional flooded ice rink, the synthetic rink can be used in all temperatures!

The Elm Street Park skating rink is adjacent to the downtown Zeeland Splash Pad Park, and therefore, provides access to public restrooms and the outdoor fireplace. The City of Zeeland is happy to host this winter wonderland experience for local and visiting families!

We have assembled the following list of questions and answers that will assist skaters as they navigate this program:

WHERE CAN I RENT ICE SKATES? Skates are available at the Howard Miller Public Library at 14 S. Church Street during regular business hours: Monday-Thursday- 9:00am - 8:00pm Friday- 9:00am - 5:00pm Saturday- 9:00am - 3:00pm

WHO CAN RENT SKATES? Adults, 18 years of age or older, are able to rent skates for themselves and for minor children. The adult must have either a Howard Miller Public Library card or a card from a Lakeland Library Cooperative library and must complete a liability waiver for each skater in order to borrow ice skates through this program.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Free! There is no charge to rent the ice skates.

HOW LONG CAN I USE THE SKATES? Each skate rental is for 48 hours. Skates must be returned with their original bag and skate guards to the library during regular business hours. Due to the size of this item, skates must be returned directly to a staff member inside the library.

WHAT IF I RETURN THE SKATES LATE? The success of this program depends on community members returning the skates on time; however, we know that life happens. If returned after the 48-hour rental period, a $1.00 per day overdue fee will be assessed. If skates are not returned within 5 days, the library card holder will be charged the full replacement cost for each pair borrowed. Thanks, in advance, for ensuring we can share this wonderful resource with everyone who wishes to use it this winter season.

WHERE CAN I USE THE SKATES? The City's public skating rink is one block away from the library at the Elm Street Park located at the corner of Elm & Cherry (across from City Hall). This rink is made of synthetic ice; the skates will work on this surface as well as traditional ice. You are also welcome to use these skates on private rinks.

WHAT SIZE SKATE SHOULD I USE? These are hockey skates, which tend to run large. If you wear a size 8 shoe, try a size 7 skate. There are places at the libr ary where you can sit and try them on.

WHAT SIZE SKATES ARE AVAILABLE? 1-2 pair of skates are available in sizes Youth 9 thru Adult 7. Skates are available on a first come, first served basis.
