Holland, MI – Salads don’t have to be boring! Join Christine Ferris, owner and executive chef at The Farmhouse Deli, at the Chef Series this Saturday, August 17 at 10:00 am to learn how to put a creative spin your typical salad. Ferris will use fresh, seasonal produce from the Holland Farmers Market to prepare three mouth-watering summer salads that utilize the best of Michigan’s summer produce, including a watermelon salad, grilled peaches and charred green beans. The Chef Series is proudly sponsored by Higher Health Chiropractic with in-kind support from Visser Farms.
As a little girl, Ferris spent countless hours in the kitchen, garden and field, baking, planting and harvesting. Splitting her time between South Haven and Santa Cruz growing up gave her an interesting perception of a traditional and progressive food scene. Her mother’s style of fresh, simple preparations, with a focus on big salads and lots of side vegetables, continues to be her style as well.
Ferris chose to go to culinary school mostly because it sounded fun. She never dreamed that 35 years later, she would still be so absolutely passionate about the culinary industry. She worked in restaurants in California, Chicago and Michigan in every position from dishes to head chef, along with working on projects with Alice Waters, Jeremy Towers and Randall Grahm while honing her skills in California and Chicago.
Ferris moved back to Michigan in 1992 and got married, had a son and worked for a few local restaurants while determining what path she wanted to take. She opened a commercial kitchen in Holland in 2008 to focus on catering. She loved the challenge of creating beautiful meals for lakeshore events but longed for a more spontaneous style of cooking, one that was dictated by the available produce rather than searching for produce that fit a menu planned a year ahead. In 2013, The Farmhouse Deli came into being, with a focus on made from scratch, local and healthy food in Douglas, Michigan.
Each week during the Chef Series at the Holland Farmers Market, a talented local chef, caterer or Market vendor demonstrates how to prepare an easy, healthy and delicious meal using fresh Market ingredients. The Chef Series is held at 10:00 am every Saturday through August 31 and is free to attend. Recipes are available at the demonstration and will also be posted online at www.hollandfarmersmarket.com the week following the demonstration.
