Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital Partners with Outdoor Discovery Center to Provide Family-Friendly Wellness Series
ZEELAND, Mich., May 14, 2019 –National Family Health and Fitness Day, celebrated the second Saturday of June each year, is the country’s largest family health and wellness event. This recognition is meant to promote the importance of parks and recreation in keeping communities healthy.
To celebrate the family approach to health and wellness, Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital, in partnership with the Outdoor Discovery Center in Holland, will be kicking off a new family wellness program called Fit & Healthy Families on Thursday, June 6. This eight-week series, taught by a registered dietitian, is designed to give families a break from screen time and encourage outdoor physical activity and healthy eating. The class takes place at the Outdoor Discovery Center so families can hit the trails, enjoy the parks, view live birds of prey and kayak, while spending quality time together.
“The main purpose of this class is to get families outside together and help them find activities the whole family enjoys as well as provide usable nutrition information,” said Heidi Lynema, registered dietitian and community health programs specialist, Zeeland Community Hospital. “The first half of each class incorporates interactive activities like food demonstrations, charades and matching games to teach the kids about nutrition. Physical activities follow, including hiking the trails, playing on the playground, practicing Zumba or embarking on a family scavenger hunt.”
The summer session of Fit & Healthy Families will be held every Thursday from June 6 to August 1 at 6 p.m. The fee is $25 per family. The fall session will be September 5 through October 24. The Outdoor Discovery Center is located at 4214 56thStreet, Holland, MI 49423.
