The History of Holland/Zeeland Young Professionals
Holland/Zeeland Young Professionals (HYP) launched in 2003 as the first YP group in West Michigan, inspired by the book Rise of the Creative Class and local efforts to make Holland a vibrant place for emerging leaders. Founded by Barry Rice, Mat Nguyen, and Robyn Wennersten, HYP began as a way to connect and empower young professionals—and has since grown into a thriving network of 1,600+ members.
What's Next for HYP?
HYP is now part of the Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce, bringing fresh energy and long-term support to the lakeshore’s young professionals. This move honors HYP’s 20-year legacy while adding dedicated staff, stronger marketing, and deeper business connections.
The current HYP Board will stay on through the transition, working with the Chamber to shape the future framework. Programming kicks off in September, guided by the board and supported by Chamber leadership.
